How to play a word association game
- Generate a starting word and read it aloud.
- The next player answers with the first word it brings to mind, then the next player responds to that word.
- A player is out if they pause too long, repeat a word, or can’t explain the link when challenged.
- Keep going until one player is left, or set a timer and count how long your group’s chain gets.
The Easy list uses short, concrete words that suit kids and quick rounds. Everyday words are familiar objects with several possible directions. Hard words are abstract ideas like “justice” or “nostalgia” that slow the chain down and produce the most surprising answers.
Ways to use the associations
- Check your answers: after a round, compare your chain with the common associations shown under each word.
- Follow a chain: tap an underlined association to jump to that word and see where the next link leads.
- Practice for puzzles: grouping games like Connections Unlimited reward players who see three or four links per word, not just the first one.
Frequently asked questions
-
Where do the words come from?
Our editors picked them by hand. There are 60 prompt words across three difficulty levels and 48 starting words with six common associations each. The full set is published on the word association lists page.
-
Why doesn’t every word show associations?
Associations are listed only for the starting words in our themed tables. For other prompt words, the game is to come up with your own; there is no single correct answer.
-
Is this the same as a psychological word association test?
No. This generator is for games and practice. The classic test developed by Carl Jung uses a fixed list of stimulus words and timed responses; read about it in our word association test guide.
